A woman traveling in Humboldt County noticed an abandoned vehicle on the side of the road. She was surprised to find a small dog in the car. The police investigation led to an eye-opening discovery. The human companion of the dog found had actually died by suicide. According to social media comments, the man got out of his car to commit suicide and left the dog locked in it.
Local Shelter Locates the dog's closest relative
Humboldt County Animal Shelter took possession of the orphaned dog and got to work immediately. They learned that the dog's name was Banks. They were able to track down the next of kin who live outside the area where the dog was found. The relatives informed Humboldt County Animal Shelter that Banks was around 15 years old. Unable to take the dog alone, they asked the shelter to bring Banks home to live his golden years.
Humboldt County Animal Shelter remembers a potential user
The shelter's staff work tirelessly to match dogs with the best adopters possible. In this case, the shelter's assistant, Jeanette Duncan, recalled an already qualified applicant who wanted to adopt a "nice older dog". Meredith Maier is the co-owner of a local dog-friendly restaurant called Six Rivers Brewery. Meredith was very excited to receive the call about Banks, his story, and his need for a new home forever.
"We are so proud and touched to do the job we are doing here at the shelter to provide safe landing spots for so many pets in need and to bring them back to either their owners or their new lives." Duncan wrote on Facebook.
Congratulations to Banks, Meredith, and the Humboldt County authorities for making the best possible outcome of this sad situation.
