The government of Tamil Nadu has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) of its strategy to promote electric mobility in the state, under which it will set up electric vehicle charging stations in six major cities, namely Coimbatore, Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem and Tirunelveli.
The state government has claimed it will set up EV charging stations in government office parking spaces, on NHAI and state highways.
In addition, the Tamil Nadu government has announced that it will provide 100% tax exemptions to the state's electric vehicle industry through December 31, 2025. Also, these industries receive a tax exemption for buying land factories.
The state government plans to encourage the conversion of all auto rickshaws and taxis to electric vehicles in the six cities mentioned above within 10 years. There are also plans to introduce 1,000 electric buses each year. In order to promote electromobility in the state, private operators and educational institutions are encouraged to introduce electric vehicles.
As the Tamil Nadu government told NGT, it aims to attract Rs50,000 of core investment into the state's entire EV economy. The state announced its EV policy back in September 2019, which allegedly prompted many new companies to start manufacturing and trading electric vehicles.
According to the EV directive Announced by the state government, there will be an exclusive EV park that will be built on 300 hectares of land. The companies that set up their systems in this EV Park receive benefits such as 100% GST reimbursement and 50% capital subsidy.
According to the EV policy of the Tamil Nadu government, the state aims to establish itself as a hub for the production of electric vehicles and EV components including battery and charging infrastructure.
